World Changers of the Week

This week’s world changers are the Wright Brothers who are American aviation pioneers credited with building, inventing, and flying the world’s first successful motor-operated airplane.

Sage Oak Celebrates

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: Sage Oak recognizes the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

National Teacher Appreciation Day (5/2/2023): We encourage you to celebrate your Sage Oak teacher on National Teacher Appreciation Day this Tuesday, May 2nd, 2023.

Counseling Corner & Mental Health Awareness Month
Many Sage Oak students have been busy taking the CAASPP test, and many more will be completing it this week. While feeling nervous before a test is normal, some students find test-taking debilitating.

During our parent workshop, we reviewed strategies to help our students cope with testing anxiety. If you missed last week’s live webinar, we invite parents to listen to our recording and share the Quick Tip with your student.

“Future World Changers”
Virtual 2023 Talent Show
Sage Oak is excited for our third annual Virtual Talent Show “Future World Changers!” We are already seeing a variety of student talents ranging from playing a musical instrument to performing magic tricks. The submission deadline has been extended to Friday, May 12th.

So whether your Sage Oak future world changer excels at snowboarding, singing, skateboarding, dancing, or even hula hooping, we want them to showcase their talent on the virtual stage. All talents, skills, and hobbies are encouraged. We are excited to see our Sage Oak future world changers shine!

End-of-Year Promotions & Socials
Mark your calendars for Sage Oak’s End-of-Year Socials! Our final Socials of the school year will fittingly take place on the last day of school, Friday, June 9th, at a regional location near you.

In addition to fun Social activities, we will also have promotion ceremonies for our PLA kindergartners, 5th graders, and 8th graders. So mark your calendars and look for additional information to be shared over the next several weeks. We can’t wait to see you there!

VLA students are welcome to attend but will have their own Virtual Academy End of Year Social on Friday, June 2nd. VLA promotion ceremonies will be held virtually during class time on Thursday, June 8th.

Ronald McDonald Walk for Kids 2023
We are excited to participate in the annual Ronald McDonald Walk for Kids. The Walk for Kids is a community fundraiser that supports the children and families who rely on the life-changing services and programs provided by the Ronald McDonald House.

Please click on the regional team event links below if you would like to join your local Sage Oak Charter Schools team. Registration is $25 for adults and children 17 and under are free. All team members (students, families, staff) are encouraged to meet up prior to the race for some connection time and photo opportunities. Look for the Sage Oak leader wearing a Sage Oak t-shirt!

Saturday, May 6th – Orange County (Championship Soccer Stadium, Irvine)
Meet near the starting line at 8:15 am. The walk starts at 8:45 am.
Sunday, June 4th – Long Beach (Shoreline Park, Long Beach)
Meet near the starting line at 7:30 am. The walk starts at 8 am.

Sage Stage – Art with Jamie Butterworth
Join us on the Sage Stage. this Friday, April 5th at 9 am. Our guest, Mrs. Butterworth will be back for another amazing art lesson. Learn artistic strategies such as contrast, symmetry, lines, dots, shading, and more that you can apply to any artwork, anytime!

Presidential Volunteer Service Award
Thank you to all of our students who participated in The President’s Volunteer Service Award program (PVSA) this year. We are proud of our Sage Oak World Changers! We appreciate your efforts to meet the needs of your community and support one of Sage Oak’s core values.

We are currently calculating your service hours and ordering awards now. We plan to get those into your hands before the end of the school year. We are no longer accepting recording hours forms.

The 2023-24 PVSA window will run from May 1, 2023-April 30, 2024. We won’t be opening next year’s reporting forms until the fall. If you plan to participate again next year (and we sure hope you do) please keep track of your hours and volunteer signatures so that you can properly record this information in the fall once we open the program back up again.

We look forward to working with you for the 2023-2024 school year!

This week, we are getting a “behind the scenes” peek at what it is like to have a thriving digital music career with Hollywood Music Producer, Brent Daniels. Brent will share how teachers influenced his love for music and how he turned his passion into a career using technology you might have on your iPhone or iPad like GarageBand.

In Episode 24, Tiffiny is sharing some fun and easy PE activities you can do at home. Activity is a great way to build muscle, increase cognitive function, and reduce stress. This episode also included a PE Guide for parents with links to websites and demonstration videos. You can find the guide linked in the show notes.

Branch Out Summer Bridge Program K-7th
Sage Oak’s Branch Out summer program is a free, self-guided, online program that consists of daily pre-recorded video lessons designed to prevent summer learning loss.

Students going into grades K-7th grade will watch short introductory video lessons, play optional, online learning games, and complete workbook pages that review the concepts of the previous grade level and prepare them for the next grade level. The Summer Bridge workbook can be purchased from Carson Dellosa for the grade that the student will be entering next year. The middle school math program consists of short video lessons reviewing pre-algebra and algebra concepts with accompanying practice worksheets. No curriculum is needed for the middle school program.
