Printed & Pressed: The Art of Printmaking

Explore the bold, hands-on world of printmaking in this creative semester-long class designed for middle school artists! Students will experiment with a wide range of techniques—starting with foam printing, handmade stamps, and stencil design—to learn the building blocks of image-making through repetition, texture, and layered color. As skills and confidence grow, the class will dive into more advanced methods including linoleum block printing, drypoint etching, and photo transfers, offering students the opportunity to carve, ink, and press their own original designs. Along the way, students will gain a strong understanding of positive/negative space, composition, and the magic of transformation that happens with each print pulled. Projects will include both paper- and fabric-based works, culminating in a final fabric printing project where students apply their designs to wearable or functional items—combining fine art with real-world creativity. Students will engage in critiquing and feedback sessions, developing their artistic eye, refining techniques, and learning how to thoughtfully evaluate their own work and that of their peers. This supportive environment encourages growth, experimentation, and confidence in expressing unique creative voices. From stencils to carving tools, every week introduces a new technique and fresh challenges. Whether you’re layering colors, pulling your first print, or designing your own textile, you’ll experience the thrill of turning ideas into bold, repeatable art. *Adult supervision is required while using these tools.
