In this class, students will explore The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, a powerful story about friendship and understanding during a difficult time in history. We will read about Bruno, a young boy whose family moves near a concentration camp during World War II. Students will discuss the themes of innocence, friendship, and the impact of prejudice. Through guided reading and group activities, we will examine how Bruno’s friendship with a boy on the other side of the camp fence changes his view of the world. The class will also include lessons on historical context to help students better understand the setting and events. We will encourage students to think critically about the choices characters make and how those choices affect others. By the end of the unit, students will reflect on the importance of empathy and standing up against injustice!
