Lenses & Light: Creative Digital Photography

This hands-on course introduces students to both the art and science of digital photography. Students will learn how cameras work, how to compose strong images, and how to use lighting, focus, and perspective to create expressive photographs. Participants will learn the fundamentals of lighting, including natural light, continuous and flash techniques, and how to shape light with modifiers. We’ll cover staging and composition—arranging subjects, backgrounds, and props to tell a clear visual story. Attention to color, texture, and negative space will help students craft mood and focus within each frame. The class includes hands-on exercises in portrait, still life, and environmental photography to apply concepts in real situations. Students will also practice basic post-processing workflows to enhance images while preserving authenticity. By the end of the course, learners will confidently control light, space, and presentation to produce stronger, more intentional photographs.

Students should have access to some form of digital camera or tablet/computer camera. (This is a repeat course – new students welcome to join!)
