Step into the world of design where fashion meets theater! In this dynamic, Project Runway-inspired class, students will explore the fundamentals of fashion and costume design with a focus on creating looks intended for stage productions. Students will learn to sketch expressive croquis (fashion figures), develop themed costume concepts, and bring characters to life through fabric, form, and imagination. Weekly challenges—ranging from historical inspiration to futuristic fantasy—will push creativity while encouraging bold design choices. Students will study the work of renowned fashion and costume designers, gaining insight into how professionals design for movement, lighting, and storytelling. Regular critiques and feedback sessions will help develop a designer’s eye and refine their personal style. To better understand how fabric behaves, students will create a small-scale version of one of their costume designs in the final weeks—experimenting with draping, proportion, and construction techniques. The class culminates in a Fashion Showcase, where each student presents their mini collection and small-scale garment. Perfect for aspiring fashion designers, costume artists, and creative storytellers ready to bring their designs from sketch to stage! *Please note this course takes place twice a week for a full semester.
