Behind the Brush: Makeup Artistry Unmasked

Step into the transformative world of makeup artistry in this semester-long class designed for students eager to explore film, television, and theater makeup. This hands-on course will guide you through the fundamentals and advanced techniques of makeup design, character creation, and special effects through the magic of face painting on a face mannequin. Start by learning foundational skills—applying makeup to your own face to practice precision, color theory, and contouring. Then, you’ll advance to working with mannequin face forms, where you’ll experiment with complex designs and build confidence without the pressure of live models. Throughout the course, we will learn theatrical costume makeup, and specialized effects including realistic scars, wounds, blood, and monster transformations using professional-grade materials like face glue and prosthetic techniques. You’ll develop problem-solving skills and a keen eye for detail, essential for high-quality makeup artistry in media production. By semester’s end, you’ll have built a diverse portfolio of makeup looks—from elegant fashion styles to dramatic special effects—that showcase your growth and creativity as a makeup artist.
