NCAA Eligibility
What does National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) eligibility look like in high school?
To play sports at a Division I or II school, you must graduate from high school and complete 16 NCAA-approved core courses, earn a minimum GPA, and an SAT or ACT score that matches your core-course GPA. Your Education Advisor is available to assist you in planning your high school courses to meet the 16 core-course requirements.
How do I register to become NCAA eligible?
If you want to compete in NCAA sports, you need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Plan to register before starting your freshman year of high school (or year nine of secondary school).
Division I Eligibility
Complete 10 NCAA core courses, including seven in English, math, or natural/physical science, before your seventh semester.
- 4 years of English
- 3 years of Math (Algebra I or higher)
- 2 years of Natural/Physical Science (including one year of lab, if offered)
- 2 years of Social Science
- 1 year of additional English, math, or natural/physical science
- 4 years of additional courses (listed above, or foreign language, or comparative religion/philosophy)
Division II Eligibility
- 3 years of English
- 2 years of Math (Algebra I or higher)
- 2 years of Natural/Physical Science (including one year of lab, if offered)
- 2 years of Social Science
- 3 years of additional English, math, or natural/physical science
- 4 years of additional courses (listed above, or foreign language, or comparative religion/philosophy)
What is the required grade point average for eligibility?
The NCAA calculates your grade point average based only on the grades you earn in NCAA-approved core courses.
- Division I requires a minimum 2.3 GPA.
- Division II requires a minimum 2.2 GPA.
