The traditional educational approach is built on the idea that a particular body of information should be covered and mastered over the span of a student's twelve or thirteen years in school. This approach to education is teacher and textbook directed and is similar to what is found in the conventional classroom setting.

Most traditional approach learning materials are designed for use in conventional classrooms. They typically include textbooks and/or worktexts designed to follow a standardized scope and sequence. The material presented in the textbooks is generally expected to be completed and mastered at a particular grade level within an academic school semester.

Traditional textbooks are likely to have corresponding teacher's manuals, answer keys, tests, workbooks, review materials, and provide suggestions for supplementary materials and enrichment activities. Some have been developed or modified in order to work effectively and efficiently in independent study learning situations. In general they require less planning time and a minimum amount of student supervision by teachers.
