Suicide Prevention Awareness: #Bethe1toAsk
Taking care of our emotional health is always important, but now more than ever, it needs to be a priority. It’s important to acknowledge that we are all suffering from the loss of certain freedoms due to the restrictions of COVID-19.

However, our support system and personal circumstances make this time easier for some than others. Many of our kids are feeling isolated, alone, and sad that they can’t enjoy the activities and experiences that they have previously. For some, this may lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Actively learning and engaging in coping skills is imperative, however, sometimes this is just not enough. If you or a loved one are showing signs of suicidal behavior: giving away belongings, writing goodbye notes, or making plans on how to end their life, please get professional medical help immediately by calling 9-1-1, your doctor, or the National Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. September is suicide prevention month, and I want to partner with you to provide suicide prevention awareness. Research shows that people who are having thoughts of suicide feel relief when someone asks about them in a caring way. Join me and #Bethe1toAsk.

Counseling Groups: 7 Habits of Effective Students
I’m thrilled to kick off our first counseling groups of the year! Based on The 7 Habits of Effective People book series, we will be working through these 7 habits and teaching students effective ways to thrive in school and life. Students will be divided into four groups based on their grade levels: TK-Grade 2, Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. Please click on this interest survey link for more information.

Human Trafficking Webinar: September 16 at 2:30
Human trafficking is complicated and scary.  Its impact is widespread, including in our own communities. It can happen to anyone, but there are significant risk factors that make some more vulnerable. There are also preventive measures you can take to protect your children. Please join me, Allie Whalen, your school counselor, for a parent webinar on Wednesday, September 16 at 2:30 pm where I’ll address these key ideas. Here is the Zoom link. The webinar will be recorded and later posted on our website.

Quality Math Program (QMP) Resource
Last year Sage Oak focused on a Wildly Important Goal of increasing student achievement in mathematics. This will be a continued targeted focus for us this school year as we work to increase the percentage of students who meet or exceed the standard in math, as measured by the Smarter Balanced, by 4%.

One way to support this goal is to continue your use of a Quality Math Program (QMP). One publisher we feel excels in all of these areas is Singapore Math.
