Legislative Update: September 22, 2020

September 22, 2020

Dear Sage Oak families,

At the end of August, SB-820 Education Budget Trailer Bill passed in the Senate and Assembly, and on Friday, September 18, 2020, Governor Newsom signed the bill. This bill takes effect immediately.

We are disheartened by this news since the language in SB-820 states that non-classroom based charter schools, such as Sage Oak, will not be eligible for any student enrollment growth funding in the 2020-21 school year. Sage Oak will only receive funding for the number of students that were enrolled (based on average daily attendance) for the 2019-20 school year. In response to this language, there are currently several lawsuits in progress that will challenge the constitutionality of this bill, and we will share any updates on these lawsuits as we receive them.

Thank you again for following along with our legislative updates and taking action to support our students.

Sincerely,

Krista Woodgrift
Executive Director
