Legislative Update: June 25, 2020

June 25, 2020

Dear Sage Oak Families,

I know many of you were following along late last night and as you may have heard, AB-77 was voted on by the Senate Budget Committee around 11:30 pm and the vote carried. The bill will continue to move along and will be voted on by the Senate and Assembly; if it passes by both legislatures, it will move to Governor Newsom’s desk where it can be either signed or vetoed.

We have not lost this battle! Last night was a testament to the wonderful families and staff that make up the Sage Oak community; listening to the testimonies of families and staff as late as 11:30 pm gave me great hope that Sage Oak, along with other non-classroom based charter schools, can pressure our legislatures and governor to do the right thing and provide equitable funding for all students regardless of the school where they choose to enroll.

What can you do? Call and email your legislators TODAY. Let them know that your school has already enrolled hundreds of students and hired staff to support those students for the 2020-21 school year and that those students must be funded just like every other student in the state of California.

We are a strong school and we are so fortunate to have such committed staff and families. I am confident that, together, we can let our voices be heard and affect change for all students.
